Six million fans for Chinese actress Zhao Wei as Sina's top users overtake Twitter stars

Chinese actress and singer Zhao Wei (also known as Vicki Zhao) is climbing up the ranks of the most followed microbloggers worldwide.

Her fan count has exceeded 6 million, bringing her ever closer to American celebrities Ellen DeGeneres, Ashton Kutcher and Katy Perry, all of whom also recently surpassed the 6 million fan mark.

Lady Gaga continues to lead the pack with a healthy 9.4 million fans, while teenage pop star Justin Bieber is not far behind with 8.9 million followers.

While American celebrities might rule the most followed microblogger chart now, week by week Chinese microbloggers are gaining more followers than their American counterparts.

Last week Taiwanese TV host Xi?o S aka Dee Hsu overtook TV chat show host Ellen DeGeneres; this week she overtook American actor Ashton Kutcher.

On April 18 Hsu's fans totaled 6.61 million while Kutcher's follower count was slightly less at 6.56 million.

In September 2010, Twitter had 175 million registered users, while Sina reports that Weibo had more than 80 million registered users in January 2011.
