The conclusion of application of MSc. programme in Hong Kong of 2011

The following will express my personal feelings about the application of this year. SO this passage is only to the students who has the similar background and will apply the similar programmes.

First, school background.Personally, I think this is the most important factors for application of the above programmes, especially to HKU and UST, if you do not have a very excellent GPA. At least, your excellent school background will offer you an interview chance. For example, in 2011, about 180 students applied the MSc. of Statistics Programme in HKU, but in first round interview, there are only 34 students got the interview chance in Beijing, which includes 5students from Renmin University of China. And students who got the interview chance of Financial Mathematics and Statistics, were mostly from 985, 211 universities. Certainly, if your GPA is very excellent, you may also get the chance if your universities are only 211.

Second,GPA/Average Marks.I think this is the second important factor if your universities are 985 and 211. However, it will convert into the first important factor if your universities are only 211 or below if you want to attract the professors’ attention.

Third, language test scores.Personally, I think this is only a necessary condition. You should only get the lowest scores of the universities require. In fact, I think they do not care more about your language test scores to choose the interview candidates.

Fourth, PS.The importance of PS is similar to the language test scores if the universities require it. For example, I do not offer the PS in my application on UST. But in my interview, the professor said to me he has already read my PS, and he knew I expressed the interesting for this programme. At that time, I was astonished, but said nothing, because I did not provide any PS for the programme at all. So you may feel something from this.

Fifth, other materials.If attracting enough, certainly they may offer you the interview chances, even offers,

Last, interview. The performances of interview are decidable. So preparing yourselves to an excellent interview is the most important thing, which will decide whether the professor will give you an offer from the programme. For example, HKU will even give a test after the professors’ face to face interview, but due to I did not prepare this test well, even now I got no any information from this programme.

Personally, I think if the mediators can not guarantee they can offer you an offer of the universities of Hong Kong you want to get. You could do the application by yourselves, and the results will be the same.
